Ash Wednesday: Asking the Tough Question

Passage:Matthew 6:1-21

Preacher: Ben Phillips

There is a consistent theme in all our Scripture readings for Ash Wednesday, which warn against the false front of piety, detached from the true motives of the heart. Humans are creature hard wired to live in denial and to put up a front - not that externals are always bad - but we are constantly at odds with knowing what is really going on in our hearts. It takes humility and courage to know you are a sinner and ask for forgiveness, but even more to ask God to show you your sin. According to Jesus this is what the Holy Spirit does, convicts the world of its sin. The gospel however tells us that we are to also see ourselves as we are in Christ, covered in his righteousness, through no effort or cause of our own.
