Canon of Scripture 3 - The Apocrypha

Preacher: Ben Phillips

Series: The Canon of Scripture: How did the Bible become the Bible?

Category: Bible Study

Today we examine the Apocrypha, that is the body of literature produced in Palestine and Alexandria during the Intertestimenal Period. There is some confusion among Christians about how to regard these writings, and how they came to be such a big part of the question of canon. We will examine how first century Jews considered these texts, which almost unanimously was that they were edifying books but not authoritative (canonical). We'll also look at how the Early Church Father's regarded them, as well as the NT itself, and close with a survey of the current status of the Apocrypha across the three major streams of Christianity.
