It is not unusual to hear that Paul and Jesus are often at odds with each other. This however, is quite untrue, as is demonstrated in today's readings from Galatians 3-4 and the Gospel of John chapter 1. While each are covering many ideas, both zero in on a profound idea, that of adoption. In this sermon we will explore the great idea of divine adoption, that we are brought into the family of God not by our works (through the Law, as Paul argues) but by grace through faith in Christ. This is also precisely what John is writing in his Gospel, that "those who believe in the power of his name, he gave the right to become children of God, born not of the will of the flesh, or of man, but born of God." The doctrine of adoption does not get much attention, but it is the great culmination, the end point, of God's saving work in Christ for us.
