Amidst the many external pressures that the Early Church faced, there were significant internal issues it faced in the third century. Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, lived and was involved in one of the most tumultuous decades of the century, resulting in splits within the church. This raised questions of the unity of the church and the validity of ministry and sacraments in the face of differing factions.
