Heavenly Minded and Earthly Good

Passage:Mark 8:27-38

Preacher: Ben Phillips

There is an old saying which goes, "That person is so heavenly minded they are of no earthly good." In today's passage from the Gospel of Mark 8:21-38, Jesus points out that the proper reality is in fact the other way around. What does it do to gain the whole world and lose your life? The church, particularly mainline Protestant churches, in our day and age have become so focused on being of earthly good, they have lost their heavenly mindedness. How do we come to embrace a view of the world that is not an earthly view of heaven, but a heavenly view of earth. How do the realities of the existence of a just, holy, and gracious God, the coming of judgement, the accountability of our lives, and the supernatural power of the Gospel (i.e. the heavenly things) affect and change the way we view the way we live our lives, our jobs, families, priorities with time, money, and relationships, if we are indeed to be called disciples of Jesus Christ.
