Passage:Matthew 5:38-48

Preacher: Ben Phillips

Category: Church

Over the last few weeks we have been walking through Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew. Our focus has been on how his teaching reveals many features of the Kingdom of God. In today's readings, from chapter 5:38-48 and also 1Corinthians 3:10-23, we are given remarkable qualities of what the Church is to be like. Jesus indicates the church is to be different from the rest of the world because it does not operate like the culture around it nor does it take its marching orders from the culture. Paul writes that there is only one true foundation of the church and the believer, and that is Christ himself. Thus each believer is the temple of God's own Holy Spirit. Taking these and other biblical images, the Rector also shares a metaphor for the church where it is compared to a living organism, being born, metabolizing, growing, and reproducing. The Church: Living. Temple. Different.
