Merciful Risk Taking

Passage:Matthew 25:14-30

Preacher: Bishop Breidenthal

Category: Judgment

This Sunday’s Gospel reading is from Jesus’ parable of the talents in Matthew 25. In this sermon Bishop Breidenthal talks about the prospect of and also the aversion we have to taking risks. The parable focuses on three servants who are given talents, specifically money (in our day we often use the term to refer to an ability rather than money). This parable has a viable connection with the one that follows it, the parable of the sheep and goats separated by the great king on the day of judgment. Receiving the mercy of God does not just bring us comfort and security, which it does. The work of the Holy Spirit thrusts us out into the world, to challenge us into taking risks for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
