Mountain Men

Passage:Matthew 17:1-9

Preacher: Ben Phillips

This last Sunday of Epiphany brings us to the Transfiguration of Jesus. We are confronted with Jesus in a truly unique way, and to grasp what Matthew is trying to tell us we understand this powerful event through the lens of two mountain men. Jesus is up on a mountain with his core group of disciples, and Matthew tells the story in such a way as to evoke another man on a mountain with followers, Moses. In fact, the entire Transfiguration must be understood with Moses and the Exodus as its backdrop. Jesus is shown to be the one who is greater than Moses, the Promised Prophet, but also nothing less than the Son of God. However, immediately after his divine nature is revealed, Jesus does something remarkable which goes counter to the prohibitions that the Israelites had to endure at Sinai.
