Pentecost: Salvation Accomplished and Applied

Passage:John 20:19-23

Preacher: Ben Phillips

How does the pouring out of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost fit into the wider picture of salvation history? When we look back at Israel's past and see redemption accomplished by the blood of the lamb at Passover, we see this correspond to Jesus' death on the cross, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. But 50 days later God arrived on a mountaintop and applied the salvation that had been accomplished by giving his Law at Sinai. Likewise, 50 days after Jesus had accomplished salvation for sinners (all sinners, of every nation) God applied this salvation by sending the Holy Spirit. It is through the Spirit that the righteousness of Christ is imputed to sinners, it is through the Spirit of God that the dead are raised with Christ, it is through the Spirit that we are led and come to know and understand the great salvation that was accomplished by Christ for us and to the glory of God.
