The Darkness of Advent

Passage:John 1:1-5

Preacher: Ben Phillips

Category: Church Seasons

The Third Sunday of Advent is often marked at the Sunday of Joy, marked by a pink candle on the Advent Wreath. But if this is "the most wonderful time of the year" why aren't all the candles pink? In other words, shouldn't every Sunday be joyful? At Christmas we do indeed celebrate the light of the world, as John puts it, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." But in Advent we are called to pause and look at the darkness. We must see the wreckage of this world for what it is, and the darkness in ourselves, if we are truly to celebrate the coming of the light. Before we can celebrate the birth of the Savior Jesus, we must come to grips with how much this world needs a savior.
