The Power of the Message

Passage:Mark 1:14-20

Preacher: Ben Phillips

Jesus left a message, not an institution. The message of the Gospel creates a human community, the church, which in turn becomes agents of the divine message to the world. In our Gospel reading from Mark, Jesus springs onto the scene declaring "The time is fulfilled, the kingdom is at hand, repent and believe the good news!" We see this message begin to create the first Christian community when Jesus calls his disciples in the next verse. For us today this means that the Gospel message of Christ and him crucified is actually inviting (it engenders a certain curiosity), it should be the thing which flavors all our work, and it calls us to know the whole story, that is, to read and know our Bibles.
