The Shadow of Former Things

Passage:Colossians 2:8-19

Preacher: Ben Phillips

This week we continue in our sermon series, walking through the book of Colossians. In chapter 2, St. Paul presents the core message of the letter, in which he is laying our for the church the basic truths of the Christian faith. He does this by identifying three things which either formerly held power over them (and us), or were intended to be anticipatory of Christ, who is the fulfillment of all God's promises. The shadow of these former things are the empty and deceitful ideas of the world, the model of circumcision as the mark of the Old Covenant, and the requirements of the written code. The Gospel of Jesus Christ addresses each of these, and shows us with great clarity the wonder and power of Christ, the one in whom we trust.
