What's in a name?

Passage:Luke 2:15-21

Preacher: Ben Phillips

January first is the day where we celebrate the Name of Jesus, for it was on the eight day after his birth that he was both circumcised and given his name. What is the importance of naming, why does it matter, for certainly naming things is something central to God's own work, and something God has given to humanity to do as His image bearers. Jesus was also circumcised on the eighth day, in keeping with the tenet's of the Covenant of Abraham (Genesis 17:1-14). What is the significance of this event, however 'earthy' and uncomfortable such a topic may make us? This act signifies to us that Jesus was born under the Law of God, and also kept it perfectly for us.
