Whose Light Is It Anyway?

Passage:Matthew 5:13-20

Preacher: Ben Phillips

Series: Light So Shine: Stewardship 2019

Category: Stewardship & Finance

Jesus tells his followers that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. In a culture saturated with "me-ism" it can be easy and tempting to interpret this verse as referring to unlocking our own potential. But Jesus goes on to say that our light should so shine before all that they may see our good works and give glory to the Father in heaven. This verse is the theme for our 2019 Stewardship, from which we lift the phrase "Light So Shine". We note in this verse in Matthew the end result, the glory of God, that guides our understanding of this passage. Taken with a sober and fully biblical view of human nature, that we have no light in and of ourselves, we rest on the gospel truth that Jesus is the true Light, and graciously gives his Light and Life to all who believe in him. This changes the way we look at our labors, our good works that are to shine, and how we view our resources, talents and even our money. Giving to your church as a faithful disciple is a key part of God working through you to let your light so shine.
