Faith not Success

What do we make of the stories of Jesus sending his disciples out without suitcases or money and of John the Baptist's beheading?  These pop up right in the middle of a string of stories about healings and feedings.  What if these stories about following Jesus aren't about success but rather about faithfulness -- following wherever he calls and trusting that he has ultimate authority?
