Who do you say that I am?
Jesus and his disciples wandered into a city, Caesarea Philippi, famous for its multiplicity of shrines and temples to every imaginable god and demigod and mystery cult. The voices of these idols whispered to the disciples, "follow me... give me your time, your money, your priorities...and I will make you strong and great, I will give you health and wealth." And in the midst of all these whispering voices (voices which are alive and well today), Jesus looked into Peter's eyes and said, "Who do you say that I am?" And Peter responded, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." What did it mean for Peter... what does it mean for you and for me, to claim Jesus over these other voices? Saying Jesus is Messiah is a costly truth, but a truth through which real life comes.
